A backlink is a hyperlink that points from one web page to another web page on the internet. Backlinks are often used by search engines to determine a web page's importance and ranking.

In SEO, a backlink is an incoming link from one website to another. Also called an "inbound link" or "incoming link," backlinks are important because they are one of the main factors that search engines like Google use to rank websites. A website with a lot of high-quality backlinks is typically ranked higher than a website with fewer or lower-quality backlinks.

How do backlinks work?

When a website links to another website, it's effectively vouching for the quality of that site. Search engines see this as a vote of confidence, and they use backlinks as one of the main factors in determining a website's ranking.


The quality of a backlink is also important. A link from a high-quality website is worth more than a link from a low-quality website. This is because a high-quality website is more likely to be trusted by search engines and users alike.


A backlink can also be classified by its position on the page. A "dofollow" link is a link that passes along link equity, or "link juice." This is the default for most links, and it's what you want most of the time.


A "nofollow" link is a link that doesn't pass along link equity. Google introduced this attribute in 2005 as a way to stop spammy websites from gaming the system. Anytime you see a nofollow link, it means that the website linking to you isn't vouching for your quality.
